Our NW Adventures – Day 3: Whidbey Island

Day 3 of our adventures ended in Oak Harbor/Whidbey Island.  I have always wanted to go to Whidbey, since David was a part of VAQ-130 up at NAS Whidbey Island and we finally made it! It was exciting to see where David spent four years of his life, but it definitely was NOT what I had expected. I was thinking that each house would be a cute two-story home, with well-manicured lawns, complete with an American flag hung on the porch, and maybe even a “Welcome Home” sign or “We Support the Troops“. Well, that wasn’t exactly the welcoming I received. After driving around for at least an hour, we finally found A house that semi met my expectations.

While in Whidbey, I was also able to see David’s apartment that he shared with his old roommate Jason McGraw, and I got to meet one of his Navy friends, Dan “Mambo No. 5” Cowan, and I even got to go on base! Can’t post any of those pictures, but it was awesome.

But the part you all are probably interested in are the sites to see in Whidbey! My two favorites were Coupeville and Deception Pass.

I LOVED Coupeville, but if you are not paying attention you could miss the whole town all together. The entire town of Coupeville spans 22 square miles and is in the “heart of Ebey’s Landing National Historical Resereve on Whidbey Island“.  On our next visit, we will definitely be staying at a Bed & Breakfast in Coupeville, but this visit all we had time for was a lovely stroll along the quiet cove and breakfast at Knead & Feed.  The Knead & Feed only fits about 24 people at a time, but the service is wonderful, the food is delicious and the setting is famous since Practical Magic was filmed using Knead & Feed!

Deception Pass is another must-see on Whidbey Island. Deception Pass Bridge connects Fidalgo and Whidbey islands with two bridges spanning 976 feet across.  The bridges crazy length, beautiful views and tiny road make this a unique pass. In addition, US Navy jets will occassionaly fly over Deception Pass to practice.

After that, we we headed home.  But not before pumping our own gas (big deal for Oregonians) and riding on another ferry ride!

Sometimes, its not just the trip that is awesome, but its the memories you make!

Where was your favorite travel memory?
