Italian Wine Tour with Vittorio

If you are going to Italy, and you’ll be in the Tuscany region, Italy and Wine’s tour with Vittorio is a must. My wife and I did it because we read some positive reviews on Trip Advisor and we weren’t interested in renting a car and driving around on our first trip to Italy. Initially, we were a little put off by the price since we would only be visiting two wineries over the course of an entire day. Being from Portland, OR we were used to driving out to Dundee, OR and spending half a day stopping in at three or four wineries…but this story has a happy ending.

First of all, this experience was worth every penny. Vittorio is both very knowledgable as well as generally pleasant to talk with. Second, the wine trip was very different from what we were used to. This was an indepth guided experience, not just a tour. The drive out to the winery was long and gave Vittorio a chance to tell us about the places we were headed. The country side was gorgeous, but if you get car sick, take a dramamine (the roads are twisty and you’ll want to look)! The first stop was at Le Potazzine, where Michele guided us around the grounds. We had appetizers, got to tour the cellars, talked to the wine maker and owner about how they make the wine, why they make the wine the way they do, as well as the nuances around Italy’s requirements for labeling, etc. Then we stopped in a tiny little hill top town for lunch at Le Potazzine’s restaurant – La Vineria, which was amazing. We got to tour the town for a little while before departing for the next winery which was much smaller in scale.

After lunch we went to il Cocco, run by Giacomo. While this vineyard/winery was much smaller than the first one, it was SOOO much fun. We got to walk around the farm with Giacomo, play with the neighbors dog, pet his horse, and really see the inside of what it means to farm grapes and produce wine in Italy. Even my wife, who isn’t a wine LOVER like I am, really enjoyed the depth of the visit.

We went in the fall (November) and the trip was amazing. Great way to spend a day. I am pretty sure it was the best day we spent in Italy. We will do another tour of his next time we go, maybe even stay at il Cocco’s estate bed and breakfast!
